The quarrel is not with God, but with His contractors.
In his writing, religion and spirit are two different things. Religion is an organisation — it has rules, positions, contractors. The spirit walks alone, with no one standing in between.
His sharpest criticism falls on those who sell fear in the name of religion. And just as sharply on the habit by which we do not read our scriptures but worship them — because worship is the safest way to avoid a thing.
He gives a whole chapter to the religion of display. His insistence is that preserving a tradition is not wrong — what is wrong is preserving the shell long after the seed inside has been thrown away.
My quarrel is not with God, but with His contractors.
